How artificial grass is installed, step by step
The whole job, without skipping the boring half — which turns out to be the half that decides whether your yard is still flat in three years. Useful whether you hire us or hire somebody else.
Turf, artificial grass, synthetic grass: the same thing
Worth clearing up first, because everybody calls this something different. Artificial grass, synthetic turf, fake grass, and in Spanish grama artificial or césped artificial, are all the same product. The name says where the person is from, not what the material is.

Step by step
The six steps, one by one
This is how it goes in, in the real order the work happens. Three of these steps are what separate an installation that holds from one that lifts at the edges within a year.
The ground, with the natural grass removed
The first step is removing all the natural grass from the area, and clearing the ground completely. Nothing gets installed over what was already there.
Base fill across the area, then the compactor3–4″
With the ground cleared, base fill goes down across the whole area. Then the compactor runs over all of it, and the surface is levelled out.
Why it mattersThis is the step that decides whether the surface stays flat. Fill that isn't compacted settles over time, and it settles unevenly — that's where the dips and ripples you see months later come from.
Concrete around all the edges4″
Concrete goes around the entire perimeter of the area. Not some sides — every side.
Why it mattersEdges are where an installation starts to fail. With nothing solid to anchor to, the edge is the first thing to lift. It is also the easiest step to skip, because on a freshly finished job you cannot tell.
Seam tape and adhesive
Where two pieces of turf meet, the seam is joined from underneath with seam tape and adhesive. From above you do not see it.
The artificial turf, fixed with nails1½″
The turf is laid over the prepared ground and fixed down with nails.
Silica sand, and a broom that lifts the blades
Once installed, silica sand is spread across the whole surface. Finally a machine like a power broom is run over it to lift the blades.
Why it mattersThe sand is what holds the fibre upright and gives the turf the weight to stay put. Without that last step the surface stays flattened, with the roll marks still showing.

How long it actually takes
A normal residential yard is usually one or two working days, not weeks. What moves that number is not square footage: it is how much has to come out and how equipment gets in. A back yard reachable only through a three-foot side run with a wheelbarrow takes longer than one twice the size with driveway access.
Commercial work follows different logic entirely: it gets phased so the space stays usable, and the date depends on who else has to be coordinated with.
The five mistakes that ruin an install within three years
None of them shows on handover day. All of them show later. If you are getting several estimates, these are the five things worth asking about.
Laying over the top without removing
The organic material underneath decomposes and the ground sinks in patches. It is the most common shortcut and the most expensive to fix, because fixing it means lifting.
Compacting in one pass
The base is compacted in layers or it is not compacted. A base dumped in one go stays loose inside and settles on its own with use: waves and visible footprints.
No fall built in
If the base is genuinely flat, water has nowhere to go. In Florida that means puddles after every downpour and, with dogs, odour.
Edges merely laid in place
An unanchored perimeter lifts at one corner and goes from there. It is the classic failure on driveway strips, where tyres are turning on top of it too.
Fibre running different ways
It does not affect how long it lasts, but you see it forever: two-tone patches with a low sun. It is the first thing that gives artificial grass away.
Questions about the installation
Can you install artificial grass yourself?
You can, and on a small flat strip it comes out fine. What almost never comes out fine DIY is the base: it needs a compactor, knowing how much material goes in, and building the right fall — which is exactly the part that decides whether it lasts. If you are doing it yourself, give the base three times the time you think it needs.
How heavy is it, and will a balcony or roof deck take it?
The grass itself weighs little; the weight is in the sand infill. Over concrete, a balcony or a roof deck it goes in differently — no granular base, and drainage solved another way — precisely so it does not load the structure. It is a separate job and it gets decided by looking at it.
Can it be installed any time of year in Florida?
Yes. There is no season here when the work cannot happen; the only thing that disrupts it is rain, because a wet base does not compact properly and has to drain first. In the wet season that can add half a day.
What if my ground has a steep slope?
It can be installed on a slope, and that is where it pays off most: natural grass on a slope erodes and goes bare. What changes is the anchoring, which has to resist the surface wanting to slide, and the water handling, since it runs off faster.
